Nature observations during several days’ boat trips in the Delta
The weeks between early/mid-May and the end of June are the best time for unmatched bird-watching occasions in the area between the three branches of the Danube opening into the Black Sea. All birds breeding in the Delta have gathered, the variety of species, the multitude of individuals per species and the nesting activities make the observer marvel once and again; the weather is tolerably good to pleasant, the mosquitos are not getting really annoying before July and August. Nature photographers will be happy about the clear sight. The forest between the dunes of Letea and Caraorman is pale-green, under its shades the Greek liana (Periploca graeca) is blooming besides rare orchid species such as fragrant orchid (Orchis coriophora fragans) and violet limodore (Limodorum abortivum), with some luck you will discover the very rare steppe runner (Eremias arguta), a small lizard species, on the open sand areas. In the channels lined by knotted old white willow-trees, courting rollers (Corracia garrulus) are absorbed in their acrobatic flying amusement, bittern and little bittern (Botaurus stellaris & Ixobrychus minutus) shop up in the excitement of the mating season, later on they will be vanished. In short: the ideal time for a boat trip of several days.
But also in summer a several days’ boat trip will be an unforgettable experience, for at that time, young birds are around everywhere; until the beginning of September there is no place in Europe, where you can watch such a variety of bird species and multitude of individual birds. Furthermore, the white water lilies (Nyphaea alba) and other floating plants such as European frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae), water chestnut (Trapa natans), water soldier (Stratiotes aloides) and yellow water lilies (Nuphar lutea), are blooming everywhere; the warm waters of the Danube are inviting you to go for a swim and the use of a good anti-mosquito spray will help to keep the evening’s pest at bay.
These several days’ boat trips are a unique experience we can only recommend! 3 days at least, ideally 5-6 days, and accompanied by a guide on a smaller sloop, where you can also spend the night and do your cooking, in order to be able to spend as much time as possible in the most remote and most beautiful areas independent from a permanent accomodation. A sloop has the transport permission for 10 passengers at the maximum, disposes of 1 cabin, in which 4-6 persons can spend the night – in case there are more persons interested, you should take a tent with you. On board, you will find everything necessary for self-catering. Apart from the captain and, if you wish so, the guide, you are on your own and can determine pace and route.
We are cooperating with a small group of reliable boat owners, whom we have known for years already. For details and prices please click here; further information and vacant dates on request. |
